A body of local churches has come together to remember God’s children who have lost their life to AIDS and to support their loved ones. Please join us at the First United Methodist Church in Birmingham, on Sunday, February 26th at 7 p.m. for a memorial service followed by a special time of fellowship. During this time you will have a unique opportunity to honor loved ones at the AIDS Memorial tree and to view panels of the AIDS Memorial Quilt. Pastor Bob Cornwall has been asked to be the preacher for this event.

]]>Conversations on Islam and Christianity -- Begins February 15http://centralwoodward.org/news/2012/1/30/conversations-on-islam-and-christianity-begins-february-15.htmlBob Cornwall2012-01-30T15:51:48ZEducation Interfaith Islam NewsAs a follow up to our Fall series on Islam, Professor Saeed Khan, has agreed to participate in a series of monthly conversations on Islam and Christianity.  We will meet on the third Wednesday of the month at 7:00 pm at the Panera Bread Company located at 1325 Coolidge Highway (in the shopping center on Coolidge at Maple in Troy.  

We will gather around a table in the back section of the restaurant, share a drink and food (if you like), and enjoy conversation about our two faith traditions.  Pastor Bob  and Saeed Khan, who is a Lecturer on Islam and the Near East at Wayne State University, as well as being a founder and Fellow of the Institute of Social Policy and Understanding, will lead this open discussion.

The series is set to run for four months -- February through May.

This seminar will offer a comprehensive look at both the Biblical/Theological themes and the “best practices” that combine to proclaim the abundance of God and create generous faith communities.  Persons attending this workshop will be equipped with texts that inform our faith around the multi-faceted issue of stewardship (it is about more than just money!) so that we move beyond giving that is motivated by guilt or a “give to get” theology.  Participants will also learn the key policy and practice issues that enable people to practice generosity and keep the congregation focused on its mission and ministry (rather than “meeting the budget” concerns).

 

This workshop is being offered at no cost to participants, though participants are invited to provide a donation to defray travel costs.  In addition, a light lunch of soup and sandwiches will be served after the workshop for a $5 donation.  Please RSVP for lunch.  A Personal Finance workshop will follow after lunch.

Rev. Bruce A. Barkhauer, the first “Minister for Faith and Giving for Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).  In this position he heads the Center for Faith and Giving  (http://centerforfaithandgiving.org).   For twenty-five years he has led congregations in Ohio and Indiana in achieving high levels of financial support for local and global missions and he now shares his experi­ence across the life of the whole church.

His energy, vision, and entrepreneurial spirit enhance gifts in both business and ministry. He brings a biblically based understanding about stewardship combined with theological integrity and weds them to the current trends and best prac­tices related to spirituality and money. In his workshops and writings, Rev. Barkhauer also talks about the multiple understandings about stewardship in the biblical witness as they touch the whole life of a person of faith. 

He is a graduate of Ohio University (Athens), Christian Theological Seminary (Indianapolis), and did Doctor of Ministry studies at Ashland Theological Seminary (Ashland, OH).  He is married to Laura and they share three grown children.

On December 24th we will celebrate Christmas Eve with our traditional candle light service of carols, readings, a meditation from the pastor, communion.  The service begins at 6 pm.  Everyone is welcome to join us for worship.

On Christmas morning worship will begin at 11 AM, a half hour later than normal.  We will celebrate the birth of Christ with a service of readings, carols, and communion.  

Please join us for a wonderful start to the Christmas season.
