The message of the season is simple: Prepare the way for the Lord. John the Baptist cries out, telling us to wake up, be alert, look around, and see what God is doing in our midst. Make a highway ready, so he might walk in our midst, renewing our strength and guiding us on new paths.
Of course, we can miss the evidence of his coming, either because we’re just plain busy or because we’ve gotten caught up in the negative aspects of life. It is a busy season, and the news is full of stories about jobs lost, foreclosed houses, murders, robberies, deaths in battle, bombings, and riots. Ah, we must be realistic – there is a lot of bad news these days.
